Remedial Massage

What is remedial massage?

Remedial massage is a systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, ligaments and connective tissues, which assists in pain or injury management and rehabilitation. It is considered a complementary and alternative medicine and often complements other modalities, such as chiropractic, osteopathy or physiotherapy, to help with various medical conditions or ailments.

What to expect during remedial massage treatment

Remedial massage provides a client-centered approach to treatment, in which you are also part of the treatment process. You do not need any special preparations for a treatment. Before a treatment begins, your therapist will take your medical history and consent forms and undergo a full health assessment with you. This will include a number or range of movements and orthopaedic and palpatory assessments to assess what could be the cause of the pain/discomfort/ailment that could be the cause of your symptoms. With your consent, you will be asked to undress to underwear and lie on the massage table, draped with a towel, and treatment will begin. At any time you feel pain or discomfort, you should tell the therapist to stop or reduce pressure. After a treatment, you may be tender in some places, but nothing that will cause serious discomfort.

As an osteopathic medical student, I integrate the techniques and principles I have learned into my approach to remedial massage. I can apply effective manual therapies like muscle energy techniques to address musculoskeletal issues by combining my understanding of anatomy, musculoskeletal function, and osteopathic concepts. While I am not a practising osteopath, as I have not yet completed my master's degree, my current knowledge and training allows me the ability to provide targeted and holistic care in a massage setting, promoting healing and improving overall well-being.
